A particularly useful source of data where countries do not conduct a major national study of criminal victimisation is the ICVS. Many EU countries contribute data and there is the further advantage that the data are available in the public domain.
The document referred to below demonstrates how ICVS data can be harnessed for costs of crime estimation purposes. The illustrations are based on data from the data sweep conducted in the year 2000 so are somewhat outdated. But the same methodology will be applicable to the data from the subsequent sweep in 2004 once they are released. The document describes how to access and extract the ICVS data and provides some illustrative estimates for losses from property offences.
