Victim and Witness Costs

Victims and witnesses of crime may have to devote considerable time as a prosecution works its way through various stages in the criminal justice system. Output is lost as a result, but there may be further costs to victims and witnesses forced to relive and recount experiences they might prefer to forget. These costs may be compounded by having to wait around in the sometimes unpleasant surroundings of a court where they may be abused by the family or friends of defendants. In some cases there may be intimidation of witnesses. More detailed crime victimisation surveys ask about the experience of victims and whether they have been intimidated and so on. Translating such findings into cost estimates has not thus far received much attention.
